Choosing a Curriculum
|
|
Many homeschoolers say that choosing curriculum is one of the most challenging aspects of home schooling. To educate yourself read books available at the Amarillo Public Library that evaluate curriculum, study curriculum catalogs and home school magazines, attend book fairs and talk with veteran homeschoolers. The more you learn about the resources available, the easier it will be to select the best curriculum for you and your child(ren).
Also, PCHEA has assembled a "Newcomer Package" that contains several catalogs, brochures, sample magazines and other home schooling information. These packages are available at our meetings, or you may contact us to make other arrangements to pick up a package. |
The cost to home school each child depends on your choices. If you select a full service program it will cost several hundred dollars, however if you design your own curriculum mainly using library resources it is considerably less.
The Central Library Youth Department has a reference shelf of homeschooling curriculum samples. You may look at a variety of textbooks designed for homeschooling as well as teacher manuals for literature based approaches. These books have been donated so that homeschoolers may look at various samples before purchasing curriculum. You may purchase home schooling curriculum at A&D Bookstore, Lifeway Christian Store, and Family Christian Store. Many homeschoolers purchase their curriculum online from numerous suppliers. Further, PCHEA offers a Used Curriculum Sale in June.
